You know what, I want to propose a really strange and very nonsensical topic?

Don't you always?

How dare you?

Right, I'm gonna propose animal sounds because I was watching some video the other day. I just realized that it's really, really different how animals sound or how people think they sound in different languages.

Oh yeah, so I know for a fact that how animals in Chinese sound and how animals sound in English is completely completely different.

Oh, do you really? you know all the animal sounds in Chinese?

I don't know all of them.

How do rabbits sound?

I don’t think rabbits make a noise. If they make a noise, they get eaten.

All right. So I thought we get into this really unlikely topic because actually you will see these words more often than you think in cartoon, in stories.

Well yeah. So shall we start with the basic ones?

Oh, the dogs and cats?

dogs and cats.

Let's do the mammals, 哺乳动物, 我们身边的哺乳动物.

So dogs, dogs我们是叫汪汪, in English is ?

woof woof.

Roughly the same.

Yeah.

I've heard some... I don't know in American this seems like there was an old way of saying they say bow-wow?

Yeah, I think that's for like we call yappy dogs.

What are yappy dogs ? the loud ones?

Loud and very very small dogs.

The chihuahuas.

Yeah, but woof is the sound that they make, but there is loads and loads of different verbs to describe the different noises they make, so like bark.

They bark就是犬吠. They also growl and some other like for example wolves they howl.

Yes.

就是嚎叫那种, but we sometimes would also use bark on human.

Yeah.

For example, my boss is barking orders at me.

Yeah exactly. So let's go to cats now because let's face it we're both cat people.

Cats just go meow.

Meow, yeah.

Out of all the languages I've ever encountered, most of the languages use meow, only Japanese people use “にゃあ”(nyaa).

Nyaa.

It is really strange.

Yeah, so we say, for example, a cat meows. But you can also say when a cat's really happy, it purrs.

就是呼噜的声音, 像打呼噜那个声音. If you rub its belly and the cat goes, I cannot do that sound.

Mmmm.

No.

But if you rub a cat's belly, it won't purr, it probably just try to bite you. It doesn't like or it will hiss at you.

Yeah. So when a cat is being quite aggressive, when a cat is angry, it goes “ssssss” that's the hiss. My cat hissed at me once after vet treatment.

I don't blame her.

All right. Now let's move on to farm animals, cows go.

Moo.

That's roughly like what we would say. 哞哞叫, moo, a moo cow.

Yeah, the cows mooed loudly in the field, it’s also used as a verb.

Yeah, little kids say moo cow, don’t they? What about horses ?

Horses normally go neigh/neɪ/, so...

Neigh, I get it.

So the horse neighed when I got close to it.

I don't even know what how horses sound in Chinese. I just know that when we try to ride a horse we say 驾, but in English is what? giddy up.

Giddy up. Giddy up.

It's like it's kind of the same.

Yeah, exactly. It's still this, even though it's slightly different sounds you can hear from the tone, it's pretty much the same.

I know what is really different is sheep and goats.羊在中文里面是咩咩叫, 我们说咩...咩....

In English they go baa, baa.

Why is it a B sound?

Because that's what it sounds like to us. And think about the word in English barbarian.

Oh, it’s the people who are only going baa baa.

So the word barbarian comes from Greek. And the Greeks believed when they heard people who weren't speaking Greek, they sounded like sheep, so barbarian.

我们中文也有这种说法, 说他们说的什么鸟语. Yeah, It's basically degrading people and languages that you don't know.

Yeah, exactly.

I guess we're all the same, we're equally bad .

Exactly. So talking about birds, chickens go cluck in English.

For us, chickens go 咯咯咯.

In English, they cluck. Or if they're a rooster, in the morning, they go cock-a-doodle-doo.

Cock-a-doodle-doo that is... I've heard of that.

Cock-a-doodle-doo, Cock-a-doodle-doo.

Oh we say 喔喔喔, yeah, okay, so for you it sounds like cock- a- doodle- doo, yeah, do that again.

Cock-a-doodle-doo, Cock-a-doodle-doo. That's what it sounds like to us.

It does sound fun. Oh actually we missed out one farm animal, pigs for us is“哼哼”,鼻子里面那个音.

In English they go Oink Oink.

Which I think is good because if you really read fast, oink, oink, oink is 哼哼哼.

So it's also a verb. The pig oink excitedly or oink happily.

So we talked about all the farm animals, we talked about chickens,what about ducks? Ducks go quack, 呱呱, 差不多, quack, quack, quack.

And owls go hoot ,hoot , hoot. So the owl hooted in the night.

One thing that I found really weird is frogs, because for us, frogs呱呱,青蛙是呱呱叫, but in English is ribbit. ribbit,ribbit,ribbit...

Ribbit, it does sound like it, but I think we're picking the different sounds frogs make.

Yeah. And the final one bees. So what sound do bees make in Chinese?

嗡嗡, 对我们来说可能听起来像嗡嗡嗡.

Yes, in English they go buzz.

So a buzzing bee.

A buzzing bee.

Bees buzz around the flowers.Yeah.

Now before we wrap this rather short episode up, I just want to share with you a very interesting expression relating to one of the words we've talked about in this episode which is bark.

Yeah.

Remember we said you can say my boss is barking orders at me. You can also use an idiom that is “bark up the wrong tree”.

Yes.

So安澜, what does that mean?

To bark up the wrong tree means to make a wrong assumption. So for example, if I say or I think he's done something wrong, but he did not, you might say to me, you're barking up the wrong tree. This is not him.

While the scenario that I heard this expression used was when a woman, when a girl thinks 安澜is attractive and shall I go and talk to him, and then her friend was saying, I think 安澜 is into guys, so you're barking into the wrong tree or you're barking up the wrong tree. I'm just using you as an example.

Okay.

But barking up the wrong tree. And this is that you assume that he's straight, but he's not, he plays for the other team. So you're barking up the wrong tree.

I would like to point out this is just only for example purposes.
