The ball drop in New York City's Times Square is a New Year's tradition just about everyone knows.

But how did this annual ritual begin?
According to Royal Museums Greenwich, timekeeping with a ball started at England's Royal Observatory in 1833 with a scarlet time ball located atop Flamsteed House.
