For example, poker face就直译为扑克脸. Is it because I don't know the origin of this, but is it because like the King, Queen, Jack, they have like a very neutral expression? That's why poker face is used to describe people showing no emotions ?

No, it's because when you play poker, the card game poker, you have to hide your enjoy emotion.

Oh, you have to keep a straight face.

You have to keep a straight face. So poker face means you're hiding your emotions, and no one knows what you're thinking. Or in the case of playing poker, no one knows what your cards are.

Yeah, a cheesy smile means a very wide, exaggerated smile.

Yeah, to me that looks spooky.

You know I don’t really like horror films.

Yeah, if you watched that really, you will not like what you just described, because you will find it really really spooky and really eerie.

对, 叫《危笑》, 喜欢恐怖片的小伙伴可以去查一下, 叫危险的危,《危笑》Smile.

So in that people would show like a big grin, yeah, that's how you know  they have been turned. They have been affected.

Yeah.

But nowadays a lot of the ID photos, they actually require you not to smile.

Yeah. Passpport, ID photos require neutral expressions worldwide, so that's why no one ever really looks happy in their passport photos or their ID photos.

Why is that? Is it just better for facial recognition?

I think it's better for facial recognition and also it's like a standardized expression really, I think it is better for facial recognition.

I remember ages ago someone was showing me articles of passport photos in like the 1920s. And back then there was no regulation.

So you have just people kind of like chopping up photos. They were like cut out from their family photo or something like that. So you could see like other people next to them and people just having a very good time and that was their passport photo.

So ID photos are more regulated.

Yeah.

All right. And we're going to finish today's episodes with some idioms about facial expressions, about smiling. So for example, to smile through the pain.

Yeah.

So to hide your sadness, your torment with a smile.

Yeah. That's something that we were encouraged to do when we were kids as well. You smile through the pain, you hide how you truly feel.

Because you have that whole “stiff upper lip” thing, 英国叫什么stiff upper lip, 就是喜怒要不行于色, 就说especially for guys, right?

Oh yeah. Or we're told to put on a brave face.

To put on a brave face. I think we have that expression in our Idioms Course 习语课就有这个to put on a brave face. It's almost like a mask that shows that you're so brave.

Yeah, you act happy even if you don't feel that way.

For example, although he was very, very nervous about the performance, but he put on a brave face and just stepped on the stage.

Precisely.

Earlier on we talked about poker face. Something similar to that is to keep a straight face.

Yeah.

So for example, he's trying to keep a straight face while watching this comedy.

Yeah, this is something that probably parents would also say to their kids as well, you know If they're showing expression and parents don't like it, they'll say wipe that look off your face.

I remember you once said don't look at me with that tone of voice which is a play on words if you get it.

I do say that quite a lot.

So next time, if you see someone you really want to have a fight with, remember this is actually you can only use this either with people very well or you're really, really angry, wipe that look off your face, so don't use it lightly.
