Yeah, let's go for it.

You know, as we're preparing for like a亲子课.

Oh, Yes.

We've been discussing ideas and the stories to tell and that got me to think about fairy tales.  童话.

Yeah, fairy tales are really really really important. And these are the stories that we grew up with. But are we gonna talk about the real fairy tales or we can talk about the Disney version of the fairy tales?

I mean, we can start with the nicer version,  and then we can gradually descend into darkness.

Sounds good.

First things first, fairy tale, fairy is usually translated into like仙女or仙子. Although I think we mentioned this before, fairies in folklore, there are actually dark creatures, they're supernatural creatures, 它更像小精灵. Fairy tale, tale is a story, 所以我们现在把它翻译成童话.

Yes. So, first of all, what actually is a fairy tale because you can talk about myth, you can talk about legend, you can talk about folklore.

But fairy tales are a mixture of all of these because their stories that include usually magical creatures, loyalty, but most importantly, a moral lesson.

Oh, like a fable.

Yes.

But it's just fables 寓言, they don't have to contain or include magical creatures.

No.

They don't really have that supernatural elements or don't have to have that supernatural elements.

Oh, yeah, and also fairy tales usually begin with “once upon a time”.

And end with “happily ever after”.

Well, the Disney versions.

I guess that's not the original. The clean version, the child friendly version of fairy tale always starts with “once upon a time” and always ends with “happily ever after”. So these two phrases have already got into the English vocabulary.

Oh, yeah.

很久以前once upon a time. 就这样, 王子和公主幸福地生活在一起, 直到永远happily ever after.

Yes, so, common themes in pretty much most fairy tales are good versus evil.

The goodies and the baddies.

Some form of transformation.

Ah, like Cinderella.

Yeah, and also bravery, honesty, all the things that you essentially want children to grow up to be.

Yeah, exactly.

So first of all, let's take a look at the most famous fairy tales in English.

Like I said Cinderella.

Cinderella.

You know, it's years later that I realized Cinderella the name is from the word cinder.

Yeah.

Like cinder block. 所以我们叫灰姑娘, 你知道吗? 就是炉灰的那个灰姑娘.

Yeah, pretty much.

Cinder girl.

Actually the German is... also means the same.

So the fairy tales are common throughout Europe, but the names change quite frequently.

But essentially the story is the same. Cinderella is a young girl who's mistreated by her step family. Mostly in lots of fairy tales you normally have a wicked stepmother or stepfather, stepsister.

I really think they did a solid job of stigmatizing step parents.

They did. So she's mistreated but then eventually she marries a Prince and they all live happily ever after.

Em, yeah, this sort of very traditional framework is a girl needs to be saved somehow rescued by some external forces.

This is also why now in today's Woke Culture, a lot of those are being cancelled. A lot of those are being changed because, come on, there's certain stories that just don't sound right once you are an adult.

Oh, yeah.  For example, Snow White.

Yeah, Snow White, everybody knows白雪公主, the jealous queen, and poisoned apple, and then somehow she got resurrected by the Prince who just kissed her.

And she lived with seven dwarfs.

Yeah, it's just a bit strange.

It is a very strange story, but then you have simpler stories like for example, Little Red Riding Hood.

小红帽, little Red Riding hood. It's not little red cap, mind you, it's riding hood. Because it's... hood means like a cap. Hood是那种帽衫,  a riding hood. It's almost like a cape, isn't it?

Yeah, so it's the type of cape that people used to wear when they went riding. So, riding hood.

Girl visiting her grandmother faces danger from a wolf. Later on, we're gonna go a little bit deeper into this. The original story was actually really like PG, not even PG restricted version, not for children.

No, and finally which I think is an English fairy tale, Jack and the Beanstalk.

叫《杰克与豆蔓》? It's about kid who just basically climbs the magical beanstalk.

Yeah, he buys magic beans and his mom throwsthe beans on the ground and it grows into a magical beanstalk. He climbs it and he faces a giant.

“Fee- fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman”.

Sounds like it’s written by French.

Probably yeah.

But there are many many more, for example, years later I got to know拇指姑娘in English is Thumbelina, like thumb, 拇指姑娘Thumbelina.

And of course you have the Andersen one, 安徒生的什么The Ugly Duckling, 丑小鸭.

Yeah, Ugly Duckling, the Little Mermaid, so even though that these stories are throughout the whole of Europe, and Hans Christian Andersen was actually Danish.

These stories have become very, very popular in English speaking countries and we know all of these stories or we think we know the stories.

Because kids grow up being told bedtime stories by their parents and then watching Disney films. So they thought that's basically the story, but it's not that simple. But before that can we do a little bit of expressions relating to fairy tales?

Yep, absolutely.

So, for example, we say a fairy tale ending.

Yes.

童话般的结局.

Yeah, a fairy tale wedding.

A fairy wedding, I think there are still little girls dreaming... out there dreaming about their fairy tale wedding, everything is perfect. And their Prince Charming, 白马王子叫Prince Charming.

And after that they all live happily ever after.

从此他们就幸福地生活在一起了. And like we said, once upon a time,很久以前, in Chinese stories we say the same, we just say long long ago.

But, there are also some sort of cultural means, for example, mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all.

This has been parodied so many times. 魔镜魔镜告诉我，已经被恶搞过很多次了.

Yes.

And also you have the idea to go down the rabbit hole.

Well, that’s from Alice in Wonderland.

It’s not really a fairy tale, but it does have like a fairy tale tone to it.

Oh, yeah, I would say Alice in Wonderland's bit too modern to be kind of considered a fairy tale, but you know, it's all kind of linked together.

I don't know modern fairy tales can still be fairy tales. But Alice in Wonderland, I do agree with you, is more fantasy, is perhaps more fantasy.  And of course the reference of a glass slipper.水晶鞋其实是玻璃鞋.

Yeah, which people think is actually a mistranslation because Cinderella first appeared in English from French, and fur slipper and glass slipper actually kind of quite similar(在法语中，“vair”（意思是“毛皮”）和“verre”（意思是“玻璃”）在书写上非常相似).

Fur slipper.

Fur slipper.

Fur as in皮草、毛的.

Which does actually make a lot more sense, really.

Who wears fur slipper to a dance?

Who wears glass slipper to a dance?

No, because sometimes we translate it into crystal. 

No, in English, it's a glass slipper.  And that is simply because the French is probably not very well translated.

Or maybe it's just a blingbling slipper, you know, with rhinestone. You never know.

Okay.

A bit dazzled.

Yeah, but there's also the idea of getting home before midnight before your carriage turns into a pumpkin. Which is also from Cinderella.

I know that, was that also a mistranslation?

No, it's not mistranslation. It's just something that we do say in English.

Yeah, so a lot of these cultural references are originally from these fairy tales.

Yes.

So far so good, right?
