During the Warring States Period, there lived a highly respected scholar named Yan Chu in the State of Qi.
Renowned for his noble character, moral integrity, and profound wisdom, Yan Chu earned widespread admiration among the people.
King Xuan of Qi greatly admired Yan Chu's reputation and invited him to the royal palace.
When Yan Chu arrived, the king remained seated on his throne and asked him to step forward.
However, Yan Chu stood where he was and did not move.
He calmly said, "If Your Majesty has asked me to come closer because you value my reputation as someone who respects and advises the virtuous, then I understand your intention.
But if I were to ask Your Majesty to come closer to me, it would mean asking the ruler to lower his dignity.
Rather than having a humble scholar approach the ruler, it would be more fitting for the ruler to show respect toward a worthy person." Upon hearing these words, King Xuan felt somewhat displeased at first.
However, after witnessing Yan Chu's unwavering principles and steadfast character, the king came to admire his integrity and decided to bestow upon him wealth and honors.
Yet Yan Chu politely declined the rewards. He expressed that he preferred to live a simple, independent life free from the pursuit of status and luxury.
