Hi, everyone, and welcome back to Happy Hour. 欢迎回来酒馆.
Hi, 安澜
Hi, Lulu, hi, everyone. I've got a question for you.
Okay.
I want you to answer honestly.
Are we doing Truth or Dare?
No no no. What's your laugh like?
What's my laugh Like? You know how I laugh!
How would you describe it?
I don't know. Unprohibited, like Ma......
No, that's...you sound like a villain, a cartoon villain.
No, that's probably like a chuckle, a hearty chuckle.
A hearty chuckle. Hahaha...
No, that just sounds fake and insincere.
Hahaha...
No, that is not how I laugh. Alright, I've been told I have a very enthusiastic laugh, even contagious, like fully, like full body commitment. Sometimes I go ... a snort escapes.
A little snort there.
It's not elegant, I know.
Okay. So I would say I’m the opposite, I can have this sort of polite laugh, it’s like ... kind of like that.
Which makes you sound fake.
I know I can't do it on demand.
I'm sorry, leave this to listeners, you can vote if Anlan sounds sincere when he goes hahaha...... at a social event? Yeah, that's exactly what we're talking about today, I'm assuming?
Absolutely.
Laughter. I love this topic.
Yeah, so social media has gone a bit crazy over different types of laugh. So for example, the old money laugh, forced workplace laugh, villains cackle.
I love the old money laugh. Actually I have a friend who has money, not me, I don't have it. So he just like naturally laughs that way and I pointed out, he's like what do you mean? I always laugh this way. I can't even copy that.
I can’t do that, no.
It's a very confident, very sort of everything's in my control laugh. But more on that later, let's dive into this episode. Let's first start with the basics, because this is still a language related episode, so many words for different types of laughter. It's not just laugh, it's a whole spectrum.
Precisely. So the first one is giggle.
咯咯笑.
Why is yours so weird? Why does your giggle sound like ... some sort of pixie or imp or goblin?
It's like, that’s what the childish laugh is like, isn't it? Someone says a silly joke or and you get that little ...
But you also get girls to nervous giggle. I mean you taught Chinese class before, right? So there... especially young women and when they feel embarrassed speaking English, they do the nervous giggle.
Then you have the chuckle.
It's a quiet, restrained laugh. It's like就是轻声笑, 但是 you're not trying to lower your volume intentionally. It's just it's not like hahaha ..., but it is still a very natural laugh.
Yeah. It's the kind of thing you do when something when you're reading something funny, but you're probably in public space.
Now the one that I like is a snort ...... because it's involuntary, it's embarrassing, but it's just when that laughter escapes for your nose and it's the most honest laugh. There is, cause you can't fake it.
I can fake it, but I do understand what you mean. 我们说笑出猪叫就有点 snort.
Yes.
But then you have the cackle. Cackle is more for witches, no? Hahahah... Like that
Yeah, exactly. But you also have a friendly cackle as well, it’s like hehehehe, like that ...
You then have a sinister evil cackle, ... like that.
Precisely.
This is like the villain. There is a lesser used word, which is guffaw.
Guffaw, yeah.
Which is a loud, uninhabited like ... ha ha ha... like that.
It's kind of like when you're in the middle of saying something you start hahahah ... like that.
That probably turns heads in the public.
Yeah. Exactly.
And I love this, belly laugh. In Chinese we do say 捧腹大笑.
So it’s like the deepest fullest laugh, it’s the kind that makes your stomach hurt and tears come to your eyes...
Every laugh that comes out of your mouth sounds fake.
Sorry, I can't...
Try to do that belly laugh again.
Hahaha......
That sounds better.
Thank you.
So already English gives us this rich vocabulary for describing sound of laughter, but social media has given us a whole new set of categories, right? Like we said earlier.
So let's go through them, shall we? This is based not on sound but more on vibes and context.
First of all, the forced laugh. This is the laugh you do when you have to laugh like your boss tells a really unfunny joke.
HAHHA...... That's so funny.
That's your forced laugh? You do that with me all the time.
No, I don’t.
I thought that was your genuine laugh.
That's, no, what you get is my genuine laugh.
Okay, okay.
Always.

That is obviously a social lubricant laugh.
Is this the one to keep the peace and make everyone happy? Then you got the old money laugh.
Can we try?
Oh these poor people....... hahahaha ......
It's like your voice screams “I've never worried about money”. Relaxed? Expensive? It’s just totally at ease, everything is in my control.
So they've never had any social anxiety. They've never had to fake a laugh.
Do you remember in Miranda, the mom, Penny, because she is like posh. Anyway Miranda is a British comedy TV show. So Penny does this to, this year in the social scene, in the high society social scene, the laugh is based on a song ...... So that's sort of old money laugh, isn't it? It's almost formulaic. It's a laugh of someone who really feels genuinely relaxed. They never had social anxiety.
And the opposite then is the nervous laugh ...
Yeah, it's people who don't really have very high self-esteem that they are awkward in most of the situations. So this is a laugh to sort of mask anxiety, to buy time.
Precisely.
Very rarely do this. I don't feel very nervous.
No, not really.
The next one I do do, the sarcastic laugh ... No, that's too cartoonish.
But that's the most famous example from the Simpsons, Nelson Muntz.
But I would say, ha...... Coming from your nose, someone says something ridiculous and then you give them a ha... from your nose.

But then the evil laugh. I love this one.
You mean like from the villain ...... When a cartoon villain plotting world domination.
Yeah. So on social media there’s a meme people using it to announce they're doing some chaotic, doing something a little bit evil.
Everything can be turned into a meme. I often imagine if my cat were to laugh like a human, this would be her laugh, the evil laugh.
I could imagine that.

Yeah, but then you also have the polite giggle. It's not fake, per se.
It's like......
It is just to acknowledge that things are happening. 就是脸上挂着笑意吧,这种感觉.。
Okay, as we're coming to the end of this laughter episode, let's talk about us, shall we? So how would you describe your laugh?
I would say it's probably somewhat like a sort of polite giggle, really, even sometimes a little bit nervous laugh as well. One of the things is that I don't feel very comfortable laughing. It's not so much I don't like laughing, but in social settings I never really quite know how to laugh.
Is this like a British thing?
It is, it is because when we make jokes and everything we don't really expect to laugh or we don't really feel comfortable laughing, and to be honest, I kind of like making other people laugh rather than having other people make me laugh.
But I've seen you do the very polite even like a politician, a diplomatic laugh that this is why I said it's not...doesn't sound very authentic because I know you, doesn't sound really that authentic. It doesn't sound like it's coming from your heart. But it's more like this is the social situation, I have to do it.
Exactly, and I'll be honest with you. I've done that a few times myself. But sometimes I've been a snort laughter with close friends.
I mean, I, on the other hand I have a pretty contagious laugh. I don't really hold back and my face is all like messed up, I would say. You know how women who they want to take a good picture, they like try to control the muscles on their face, if you want me to take a picture, I don't smile in a very natural way, but if you catch me off guard, I do like laugh however I want to laugh.
No, I get that. I can see that.
So what about your laughter? Leave us a comment in the comment section or put in your request for any other topics you want us to talk about in this segment.
So until next time.
We'll see you next time.
Bye.
Bye.
